Our system is broken. Exxon gets the Supreme Court to forget that it is there job to interpret the law, that math is just as important.

It is a sad day here in Alaska.  We have learned that the Supreme Court has lost it's backbone. While the Supreme Court seemed to somewhat remember that they set the precedent for the country and ruled that Exxon was in fact guilty, they somehow decided it was okay to change the price. Why the pity for a company that makes that much money in a few months, when this has taken 22 years, a whole lot of families, and a complete change in the economy for the entire State? I can't tell. The judgement makes little sense. I've got to get to work, so I will report more later. Someone I know will be getting about $15 for this ruling. Would double or more than that be enough? Not likely. Surely for not having your world turned upside down, livelihood ruined, culture and way of life turned upside down. But is this a strong message that the Supreme Court is sending? Absolutely.

It sends the message that our strongest branch of government in our country is broken. It went through all the hoops to vine its way around to slowly choke it's own people in the name of big business. It has broken itself with this ruling, a clear example that ALL of our government is broken. The values that this country was founded on, that checks and balances are important, have eroded into a sea of money and greed, money that those few don't actually need, while the rest of us are affected so much more because we are lower down on the economic totem pole.  I am disgusted. I hope you are, too.

More than ever, we need to elect a president who wants to represent the people, to ensure that rights are granted to actual people, not corporations with psuedo person status that have more rights than you and me according to the Court. We need to elect Obama.

I've got to get to work. More soon.

"When the Tide is out, the table is set" or, why OFFSHORE DRILLING IS A BAD IDEA

Bidarki: Where Science and Spirit Meet from Kevin Co on Vimeo.

Here is a video of a project I am so proud and honored I was a part of. I worked with Anne the western scientist here, and the traditional local scientists of the villages on this amazing project about an important Suq'piaq Allutiq food source found in the intertidal here, the (i'm spelling this phonetically here, my allutiq is awful, i'm so sorry) Aahoy-duq, otherwise called the Bidarki, or the Black Leather Chiton, or Katherina tunicata. (by the way, that's me driving that good looking aluminum anchor point skiff, the Lady Bidarka, into those knarly prop biters. and, by the way, my props had a high rate of non-biteness)

And what does this have to do with oil? Well, most people still don't go picking (harvesting) anywhere near where they saw oil spilled from the exxon valdez. some still don't eat many because of it. But even more are horrified and feel excluded from decision making because in our own Cook Inlet, our waters are not allowed to be included in the Clean Water Act. Not only is there very little oversight to our offshore drilling sites in Cook Inlet, but Oil companies are legally allowed to dump everything that is a by product in oil extraction into our waters. Without processing at all. Cyanide, cadmium and more shooting out the out pipe into where our dinner swim through.

Heard about the Cook Inlet Beluga whale? No one knows how many are left, but sightings are getting extremely rare, and their prey are very susceptible to the chemical pollution dumped from Cook Inlet's oil drilling operations, so it is no wonder that our belugas are most likely soon to be extinct.

Know anyone involved in an Upper Cook Inlet fishery? The past few years haven't brought much salmon to the table, let alone the money these fishing families need to survive, and this year the closures in our upper cook inlet watersheds are frightening.

I could go on and on, but I think you understand. This is important to everyone, everywhere. Bristol Bay, the most successful wild salmon fishery in the world has already been put under the trigger by the Bush administration selling Offshore Drilling leases there, the last thing we need is the administrations' buddy McFrightening to come along and dot our coastlines with pollution machines so we can continue this unhealthy lust for oil.

To me, it is really not surprising that McCain wants to do this. If the man cannot respect his own wife enough to cheat behind her newly disabled back as he did to his first wife, how can we trust him to respect where we get our food and livelihoods from? That's right. We cannot trust McCain.

I need a man who respects me, the land I live off of and the people I am a part of. For the presidency, Obama is this man.

I'm Counting on You to help!

Okay, so I just had a friend visit this, and now i'm disappointed and not knowing what to do. Part of my fundraising campaign was to post ads to this site, but unfortunately i just saw the horrid ads that others have been seeing. When i see the ads, they are fine, but i've been getting reports that other's see otherwise.

For instance, an ad with Obama photoshopped in with 'terrorist' photos from the McCain campaign. I can't have that two timing Bush loving guy campaigning from MY blog for Obama!!!! And another - an ad for Obama sock toys. How racist and disgusting is that? I realize this country is still racist, but a sock puppet? What's next? An ad for a black face show?

Love to hear what you all think and if you've seen any of these. I mean, part of me wants to show these just because I want you to see the horror that is out there, but then again, I just can't support these. For now, I've removed the ad widgets, so now, no ads, good or bad.

I'm new to this. New to the blogosphere. New to the making money online thing. But one thing is clear - I have only made $100 towards my goal, towards my much needed capital to do what I was elected out of 200 people to do. Please click on the donate button today to make a secure, credit card donation through pay pal. Thank you! Every dollar counts. Please help me so that I don't let down the people of Alaska that are counting on them to represent them!

Obama's Record on Women's Issues

Unfortunately, Alaska has the Nation's worst record for violence against women. Three out of four adult women have been raped at least once. Domestic violence is the worst in the U.S. We need a president who will vouch for us. Ladies, no matter where you are, this is important. No matter what gender, or where we are in the country, if our president doesn't respect our mothers, daughters and sisters, then how will they respect anything else?

"The whole country is counting on you to change it for the better!"

"These moments don't come around very often. And here you are, five months away from having transformed the country, made history, and changed the world. I love you guys. Now let's go win the election," Barack Obama, speech to volunteers and staff.

click play below to hear the speech in its entirety:

We need you - this is a movement of the people, in whatever form you can! Either by donating your time, by donating to the campaign, or by helping a delegate like me get to the convention! We are less than three months away from the convention, please check my counter for the exact time. We need you now! Thank you!

He Cares about Us!!!!

We've been meeting weekly over teleconference with the campaign, they really do care about us here in AK! No other presidential candidate has paid any attention to us, let alone all of this. Obama was the first presidential candidate to ever open an office in our state, and he did so very early on. Not only has he set records in this state so far, he is sticking with us!

"Mr. Obama’s campaign manager, David Plouffe, said that the primary contest had left the campaign with strong get-out-the-vote operations in Republican states that were small enough that better-than-usual turnout could make a difference in the general election. Among those he pointed to was Alaska, which last voted for a Democrat in 1964." see the rest of the article at: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/08/us/politics/08obama.html

This is the most dynamic election in the history of our country! The campaign also has us all involved in a delegate blog group, with plans for us to meet online at regular intervals. true, most of us have had my.barackobama.com blog pages already, but now we all will have them. they are really easy to do, i encourage you all to go to www.barackobama.com and get one yourself! i've met people from all over the country and have lots of new friends as a result. it's really fun and easy to get in on events in your area and hear the all of the latest! make sure when you sign up to a group though, that you check the daily email digest option or you will have 100+ emails a day in your inbox! Plus, if you donate now, your donation will be matched equally!

Not only will we win the election, but we will engage in meaningful relationships with each other and government on all levels as a result!

here are some segments of a note to the only Alaska Super Delegate still pledged to Clinton, also State party chair, and DNC delegation co-chair, Patti Higgins. It highlights some of my thoughts about the Clinton campaign and it's effects on the party as a whole.

"I'm writing you today to urge you to support Barack Obama with your Super Delegate Status as soon as possible.

I know that as an Obama supporter I am biased, but I assure you that I support him for a good reason! He has already changed politics and government as we know it! Already, it has become a movement of the people, not just those who can afford it. In my networks and travels, I have always urged people to at least get involved by getting out and to vote. In my short history of voting, reactions to my encouragement have become less and less desirable. I regularly encountered those, who were so tired of the way that Washington works had given up, become hopeless, slumped into apathy. This has affected us on so many levels! Things have gotten bad in our Nation, we all can attest.

Obama has changed my apathy into action. For myself and many others, he has engaged us in infectious hope, invigorating an entire nation with his grassroots efforts. The numbers of involvement and level of average donations for his campaign show this.

In Alaska, it is more apparent than ever. We have the chance to make history this election year, on all levels, as Democrats. So many republicans and independents that I speak to are ready to cross party lines to vote for Obama as president. We have the chance to use this tide of involvement to help our Party on more levels than ever before. Strategically speaking, I think that it is of upmost importance that we show we are united as soon as possible for our presidential candidate.

I hope that you realize your extreme importance in this epic political time, how integral you are as not only a Party leader, but as a Super Delegate in unifying our State and it's people. People all over the country are paying attention to you and your stance.

If Clinton decides to "suspend" her campaign, I fear that people will think that part of our Party is stuck in a 'business as usual' mode, using the political machine to find a weird way around what the people so integral to our society have decided. We don't need that! The time for political opt-outs without acknowledging the obvious or the responsibility of doing so should be over! Alaska, especially, has had enough of this type of politics.

I urge you to lead us towards inclusive politics, one that listens to and is composed of, the people. Please support Barack Obama for President today.

Alaskans, please contact her today! Her email is posted on http://www.alaskademocrats.org/ and you can also send it to the general mail, info@alaskademocrats.org

Obama Addresses Alaska

First Donation!

Thank you, Linda Lou Sanders, for my first donation contributing to my convention expenses! You are an amazing, beautiful and strong woman, and I am proud and honored you would support me!

not that i want this to be a competition or anything, but:

working class donators: 1
others: 0

Our Time is Now!

Here we go, the magic number has been achieved!

This tide has changed, and it is lifting us up towards hope, unity, and understanding.

The time for smart, INCLUSIVE policies and government is here!

Obama is the nominee that has, and will continue to, switch the apathetic to the impassioned. I myself can vouch for this - I was very active in politics from high school through college, but time and time again was pushed out through redistricting, age discrimination, under funding. I even moved out to the bush so I could try and ignore it! Alas, even the apathetic living in the bush are affected by bad policy. Or maybe especially? That is, if they have to work for a living. I have become hopeful again with Barack on the scene... and so are my friends that I couldn't even get to think about voting before.

We are revved up and ready to change the world, won't you come along with us?

ALASKA STATE CONVENTION

this was originally posted on my.barackobama.com site: "obama-er in alaska-Liz"

We just got back from the Alaska State Dem convention. what a truly amazing experience! the people of this campaign are amazing, from the people who merely walked in the door because they heard of 'something going on at the fairgrounds,' to the organizers, and, well everyone!

it was so inspiring to help work the obama table at the convention, amongst my other district obligations this weekend and meet so many great, hardworking people. my district, 35, was truly 'out in force,' and i'm so proud to be a part of it! we've been working so hard since our amazing Super Tuesday turnout - we were number 2 in the state second only to juneau (anchorage had many as well, but is composed of many districts). Not only that, but about 1/3 of our turnout had switched their political affiliation that night to participate, so important in this state where republican has been the norm for so many years. looks like people are tired of crooks running things!

it is so much fun to be a part of this wave of hope washing our country towards change!

i am so proud of everyone i've met through this campaign, and the amazing individuals that have come out to support democrats, in essence, the people, no matter who they are backing.

I am honored and proud to be an Obama Alaska Alternate Delegate and to be on the floor at the convention this August in Denver. Our Alaskan delegate family is strong, diverse and inclusive. Please let me know what you care about, think and need.

Thank you for all the amazing work you do, and the strong hope and courage you infect others with.

SI SE PUEDE!
